First Day of School Pictures

Joshua is a big third grader!

Trying to show us his Mario backpack... bad lighting!

Asher is a big Kindergartener

Max didn't want to be left out

This is how far behind Max walked the whole way to school

This is how happy Asher was about it.

Refusing to wear the monkey headband

Refusing to say hi to the kid next to him

...eating the monkey headband?

Walking home from the first day of school

Max had to stop for a snack

For some reason he looks so old to me in this picture!

Ah, there he is.

Max had to stop and climb on EVERY single rock along the way

He said he was EXHAUSTED from the walk home, immediately sprawling on the floor like he'd just walked 2 miles. The walk is seriously so short.

Josh, also exhausted from a long, awesome day in third grade!

Thank heaven for little boys

People are always telling me how lucky I am to have boys. "Girls are so much harder," they say. I don't disagree with them... it's not hard to figure out why girls are harder than boys.

Why little boys are awesome:

  • I can send them out the door, barely even looking at what they've done with themselves. Their clothes sorta match, they are covered up, their teeth have been brushed... good enough. No one cares if their hair isn't cute and combed, no one cares if their clothes have Pokemon all over them and their socks don't match. (Well, my mom cares about those things... but I choose to let her suffer through it.)
  • I never have to worry about what clothes I'm buying them (or people are handing down to them). They don't care what they put on their bodies; they are much more concerned about getting out and having fun than what they're wearing.
  • Shopping for boys is so simple. There are never a lot of options, and like I said - they don't care what they get, for the most part.
  • Boy toys are awesome. Dinosaurs, cars, trains, etc. No frilly princessy stuff in my house!

I work in the fitting room at Ross, and I am now completely convinced that girls are a big huge pain. Everyone is school shopping right now, so tons of kids are coming in and out with their stressed-out mothers. Girls go in with piles and piles of clothes they "just HAVE TO HAVE," and trying them on is a three-hour ordeal. Boys go into the dressing room with three pairs of pants, try them for their fit, and leave within four minutes, complete with shoes and a full wardrobe they'll probably just wear holes through anyway.

Right now my awesome husband (whom I currently, lovingly refer to as my "housewife") is cutting my boys' embarrassingly long hair. It's a pretty simple process, and we never have to pay for the service. (All I have to do is wait until Steve feels like doing it, which is usually about a month too long, lol.)

Lately I've been wondering what I'll do when my kids get old enough to stop thinking of me as the princess in each scenario. Steve frequently says thing like, "Josh, who is ___ (insert character here)?" Josh always says that Dad is the big, strong character, and I am the princess or the pretty girl. (Most recently I'm Rapunzel.)

What on earth will I do when they stop thinking I'm the pretty, fun, lighthearted character? I don't want them to grow up. Is it wrong of me to tell them not to grow? 'Cause I do. Frequently. Recently Josh apologized for growing into a new size jeans, because he knows I don't want him to get bigger. Made me feel kind of bad.

But not bad enough to accept their aging. Teenage boys are interesting, but my perfect little boys will never be little again. :(

For now I try to just appreciate that I have them. I am very lucky.
