Buy used books whenever possible and look for the one with the best notes and highlights in it, don't just buy the first one you see or the one with the most well preserved cover. For most classes you'll never look in the book again after class so there's no point in getting the "newest" looking book. The notes are sometimes as valuable as the book itself. They can save you a lot of time if they were written in the book by an intelligent student.

The price of books is what makes all college students poor. But I hope you enjoy being back at school, even if you are poor :)
